Vibe
Carry-On places a contained thriller inside one of the most stressful public spaces of the Christmas season: airport security. TSA officer Ethan Kopek is working a Christmas Eve shift when an anonymous traveler contacts him through an earpiece and threatens his pregnant girlfriend unless Ethan allows a dangerous package through screening. The premise turns ordinary airport procedure into suspense mechanics. Baggage scanners, security lanes, employee access and holiday passenger volume all become part of the tactical problem. Jaume Collet-Serra keeps Ethan physically trapped in a public workplace where panic would expose him, while Jason Bateman's unseen antagonist exerts control through calm conversation. Christmas is fundamental because the enormous passenger load and emotional stakes of holiday travel create both cover and urgency.
Watch for
- How TSA procedure becomes suspense choreography
- Taron Egerton's restrained everyday-hero performance
- Jason Bateman weaponizing calm vocal control
- Holiday passenger traffic as both obstacle and camouflage
Production notes
Netflix Media Center identifies the film as a 2024 thriller released on 13 December, with Jaume Collet-Serra directing and Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson and Jason Bateman leading the cast. T.J. Fixman wrote the screenplay. Netflix Tudum notes that the project marked the first film collaboration between Netflix and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Partners. Collet-Serra, experienced with contained transit thrillers such as Non-Stop and The Commuter, approached the airport as a visual system that had to remain varied despite the controlled environment. Danielle Deadwyler, Theo Rossi and Logan Marshall-Green support the central cat-and-mouse plot, while the story's real-time urgency keeps Christmas travel pressure constantly present.

Legacy
Carry-On was one of Netflix's most visible 2024 holiday-season releases and quickly entered discussion as a modern attempt at the Christmas action thriller. Because it is only two years old at this checkpoint, its long-term seasonal durability is not yet proven. What is already clear is that the premise uses Christmas Eve functionally rather than cosmetically: holiday air travel is the logistical condition that makes the threat especially dangerous. The film also continues Collet-Serra's career-long interest in suspense inside transportation systems. Its rank can rise later if repeated December viewing turns it into more than a successful streaming-season event.
