Jim wakes from a coma to find London almost empty after a rage virus has devastated Britain. The opening movement turns familiar civic landmarks into abandoned space, then shifts into a survival story where infected humans are only one source of danger. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland make speed central to the film’s horror. The infected do not shuffle; they sprint, forcing the camera and editing into sudden bursts after long stretches of eerie stillness. Digital video gives the emptied city a harsh immediacy, while the later military section changes the threat from biological collapse to the social structures people rebuild when ordinary rules disappear.

Watch for

  • Notice how the deserted Westminster sequence uses familiar landmarks as negative space; the shock comes from what is missing before any infected person appears.
  • Compare the frantic handheld bursts around the infected with the calmer road-movie passages. The change in camera rhythm makes safety feel temporary rather than stable.
  • Listen to how John Murphy’s score enters gradually and then overwhelms scenes that begin almost silently, especially when ordinary movement turns into pursuit.
  • The military compound changes the film’s threat model. Watch how the staging moves from open roads and improvised community to locked rooms, uniforms and enforced hierarchy.

Production notes

BFI records the film as a 2002 UK/US production directed by Boyle, written by Garland and running 113 minutes, with Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris and Megan Burns among the principal cast. Its early digital-video photography became part of the film’s visual identity, especially in the London sequences. The early London material was designed around the mobility and exposure latitude of digital video, giving the film a deliberately abrasive image that differs from the more polished look of many studio apocalypse films.

Trivia

  • Danny Boyle directed from a screenplay by Alex Garland; BFI lists Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris and Megan Burns among the principal cast.
  • Cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle’s digital-video photography was central to the emptied-London sequences and to the film’s rough, immediate texture.
  • BFI lists the film at 113 minutes; alternate-ending material should be treated as supplementary material rather than a separate default runtime.

Legacy

28 Days Later helped reenergize outbreak horror by pairing apocalyptic scale with abrasive digital immediacy and fast-moving infected antagonists. Its deserted-London imagery remains one of the film’s most durable achievements, while its alternation between eerie stillness and sudden violence influenced how later infection narratives imagined urban collapse.
