Two brothers discover a “rotten” man whose body is incubating demonic evil, then make a series of desperate choices that spread the contamination rather than contain it. The film drops the audience into a world where possession is already understood socially, but the rules are fragmented and often ignored. Demián Rugna makes the ordinary countryside feel wrong before overt supernatural events arrive. Animals, children, roads and family homes become unpredictable because the film refuses the usual reassurance of a priest or stable religious framework. Every rule seems practical until fear or impatience causes someone to break it.

Watch for

  • The film treats possession as a contamination problem with practical rules. Suspense often comes from knowing what the characters must not do and watching panic push them toward exactly those mistakes.
  • Rural daylight is used for major horrors instead of reserving supernatural events for darkness, making the world feel unsafe without visual warning.
  • The 'rotten' body is presented as both victim and hazardous object; characters argue about transport, disposal and procedure rather than immediately reaching for religious ritual.
  • Sound and offscreen action frequently announce consequences before the camera catches up, especially when violence spreads beyond the brothers’ immediate view.

Production notes

Rugna reworks possession horror around a rural rule system rather than a church-based exorcism structure. IFC’s synopsis emphasizes an infected body, failed disposal procedure and a specialist 'cleaner,' while the production keeps much of the violence in ordinary farms, roads and homes. Daylight photography and matter-of-fact practical spaces make the supernatural feel like a public-health disaster with rituals that people know but repeatedly fail to follow.

Trivia

  • Demián Rugna wrote and directed the 2023 Spanish-language film.
  • IFC Center lists a 100-minute runtime and identifies IFC Films as U.S. distributor.
  • The film screened at major genre and international festivals including Toronto and Fantastic Fest before its U.S. theatrical and Shudder releases.

Legacy

When Evil Lurks is too recent for a settled long-term legacy, but its possession mythology already distinguishes it from familiar exorcism narratives. By treating demonic corruption as a rural contamination problem governed by practical rules, the film turns procedure, community failure and daylight space into sources of dread rather than relying on church-centered ritual.
