About This Film

During Durga idol immersion on the Ichamati River, which forms part of the India-Bangladesh border, a Bangladeshi Hindu widow named Padma finds an unconscious Indian Muslim man who has crossed to her side. She shelters him, and their relationship develops under the pressure of national borders, religion, widowhood, and village surveillance. Kaushik Ganguly uses bishorjan—the ritual immersion marking the end of Durga Puja—as both event and metaphor. The river that receives the goddess also divides two Bengals whose people share language and cultural memory. The holiday is therefore structural rather than merely picturesque: the immersion creates the encounter and gives the film its language of separation, return, and letting go.

Watch For

  • Watch the Ichamati River as both physical border and emotional metaphor.
  • Notice Durga immersion imagery at the beginning and in the film’s larger language of departure.
  • Track the ways Padma’s religious and gender identity shape the risks she can take.
  • Pay attention to the contrast between shared Bengali culture and the political boundary separating India and Bangladesh.

Production Notes

The Bengal Film Archive explicitly analyzes Souvik Basu’s cinematography around Durga immersion imagery and describes bishorjan as the film’s governing metaphor of send-off and acceptance. Plot documentation confirms that Padma finds Nasir after Durga immersion on the Ichamati River. The film was written and directed by Kaushik Ganguly and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali. Runtime records vary by edition; the commonly circulated streaming version is approximately 138 minutes.

Legacy

Bishorjan became one of the most acclaimed Bengali films of its year and later generated a sequel, demonstrating the strength of its characters beyond the original premise. Its greatest contribution to holiday cinema is metaphorical precision. Durga immersion is already a ritual of farewell, and Ganguly uses that cultural meaning to frame a romance constrained by a border that divides people who share language and tradition. The film therefore treats Durga Puja’s conclusion not as a colorful backdrop but as a structure for thinking about separation itself.
