About This Film

In 1924, housemaid Jane Fairchild receives Mothering Sunday off because servants traditionally return home to visit their mothers. Jane has no mother to visit, which creates the private space for a final secret meeting with Paul Sheringham, the wealthy young man she has loved for years. Eva Husson’s adaptation of Graham Swift’s novel turns the holiday’s absence into the film’s central opportunity: everyone else’s family ritual creates Jane’s solitude. The story then folds that day into later memories of grief, writing, and self-invention. Mothering Sunday is therefore not just a date on which the romance happens. The institution of the holiday determines why the houses are empty and why Jane and Paul can be together.

Mothering Sunday —

Watch For

  • Watch how empty manor-house spaces become possible only because servants and families are away for Mothering Sunday.
  • Notice how the film moves between sensual immediacy and later memory without always announcing the transition.
  • Track Jane’s relationship to writing; the day becomes material she will carry into a future identity.
  • Pay attention to class boundaries even during intimacy—the lovers can briefly escape social rules but cannot erase them.

Production Notes

Sony Pictures Classics explicitly identifies the story as occurring on Mother’s Day/Mothering Sunday in 1924, when Jane is left alone while her employers are out. Eva Husson directed from Alice Birch’s adaptation of Graham Swift’s novel. Cannes selected the film for Cannes Première in 2021 and emphasized its memory structure and production during the COVID-19 pandemic. The film uses a 1.66:1 frame and close physical observation to preserve intimacy while moving across decades.

Legacy

Mothering Sunday is one of the rare feature films where the specific British observance rather than generic motherhood determines the narrative. Its cultural value within Holiday Movie Night comes partly from that specificity. Modern audiences may read the title as equivalent to American Mother’s Day, but the historical servant custom matters: Jane is free precisely because other domestic workers are expected to visit their mothers. The film turns that social tradition into the opening through which love, loss, and literary memory enter Jane’s life.
