About This Film

Newlyweds Melissa and Yul spend their honeymoon in China during the seventh lunar month, when tradition holds that the gates of the spirit world open and the dead roam among the living. After participating in a Hungry Ghost Festival celebration, they become stranded in the countryside and discover that local warnings are not metaphorical. Eduardo Sánchez uses the holiday as the complete supernatural rulebook: offerings, boarded homes, chants, the full moon, and fear of wandering spirits all shape the couple’s attempts to survive. Like The Maid, the film uses an outsider perspective to introduce Seventh Month customs, but its tone is more stripped-down and survival-oriented.

Hungry Ghost Festival —

Watch For

  • Watch the progression from public festival celebration to deserted rural spaces after nightfall.
  • Notice offerings and closed houses as practical signs that local residents understand the danger before the visitors do.
  • Track Melissa and Yul’s dependence on incomplete cultural knowledge.
  • Pay attention to handheld photography, which turns confusion and limited visibility into part of the creature design.

Production Notes

IMDb and contemporary plot records identify Seventh Moon as an Eduardo Sánchez horror feature set during Hungry Ghost Festival, with a 87-minute runtime. Sánchez co-wrote with Jamie Nash and brought experience from The Blair Witch Project to a story dependent on handheld immediacy and partial visibility. The holiday is explicit from the first act: the couple attends the festival before entering a remote region governed by the belief that spirits roam freely during the seventh lunar month.

Trivia

  1. Eduardo Sánchez directed and co-wrote the film.
  2. Amy Smart plays Melissa and Tim Chiou plays Yul.
  3. The runtime is 87 minutes.
  4. The story explicitly takes place during Hungry Ghost Festival.
  5. The supernatural premise derives from the belief that the dead roam during the seventh lunar month.

Legacy

Seventh Moon is less culturally grounded than The Maid, but it remains a clear example of Hungry Ghost Festival providing an entire horror premise rather than a single visual motif. Its place in the collection is therefore defensible through narrative centrality even if its outsider gaze should be acknowledged. The film also demonstrates how Seventh Month traditions entered transnational horror in the 2000s, when American genre filmmakers increasingly borrowed location, folklore, and production partnerships from Asian cinema.
