A detective investigating a man’s death in the mountains becomes fascinated by the dead man’s Chinese-born widow, Seo-rae, whose composure makes her both suspect and object of desire. Park Chan-wook builds Decision to Leave as a procedural in which observation slowly becomes intimacy: stakeouts turn into imagined proximity, interrogation becomes flirtation, and evidence acquires emotional meaning before legal meaning. That context matters because the movie arrived after Park had become internationally associated with baroque violence and revenge; here he channels the same compositional control into an adult romantic mystery with far less physical brutality.
