Friend was directed by Kwak Kyung-taek and released in 2001. Kwak Kyung-taek’s semi-autobiographical Busan drama became the highest-grossing Korean film of its moment and is inseparable from its regional dialect, period detail and the star-making force of Jang Dong-gun and Yu Oh-seong. KOFIC and KOFA identify Kwak Kyung-taek as writer-director of the 2001 Busan-set drama about four childhood friends whose adult lives divide across class and gang affiliation.
