Detective Kiên is summoned to a rural community after a young woman disappears and fear spreads around stories of a murderous supernatural presence. The case soon becomes associated with a headless corpse and with local legends that encourage villagers to interpret the danger as something beyond human reason. Kiên approaches the mystery through observation and interrogation, but every new clue pulls him deeper into old grievances, hidden relationships, class tensions, and terrifying imagery tied to the village’s past. Miss Moon, played by Đinh Ngọc Diệp, helps anchor the investigation emotionally, while the ensemble of villagers expands the field of possible suspects. The film continually asks whether the horror is supernatural, human, or an unstable combination of both.

Watch for

  • Reason versus belief: Kiên’s method depends on observation and deduction, but he works inside a community whose explanations are shaped by spirits, curses, rumor, and inherited fear. The film’s suspense comes from allowing both systems to remain dramatically useful.
  • Costume as social evidence: The production created close to 1,000 costumes and differentiated materials and layers by social class. Clothing is not merely decorative; it helps the viewer read status, authority, labor, and belonging inside the village.
  • Landscape as isolation: Victor Vũ’s team spent months finding remote northern locations. Lakes, waterfalls, grasslands, forests, and mountain terrain give the mystery geographic scale while also making the community feel cut off from easy rescue or outside verification.
  • The shared world with Người vợ cuối cùng: Viewers who saw Người vợ cuối cùng will recognize Kiên and the broader historical-literary continuity, but the film is built to function as its own mystery. The connection adds texture rather than acting as a prerequisite.

Production notes

Victor Vũ and producer Đinh Ngọc Diệp developed Thám tử Kiên: Kỳ án không đầu as a period horror-mystery centered on a character introduced in Người vợ cuối cùng. Deadline reported that the script had been in development for two years and that Galaxy Studio and November Films produced the picture, with Mockingbird handling international sales. The film returned Vũ to horror and mystery after several romantic dramas and was timed for Vietnam’s April 30 holiday period, with early screenings beginning April 25. The visual build was unusually extensive. VnExpress reported that the costume department created close to 1,000 outfits, with fabrics aged, dyed, and processed to avoid looking artificially new on camera. Clothing was differentiated by social position, and performers could wear three to five layers. Separate production reporting said the team spent around six months scouting northern locations, including remote sites in Tuyên Quang and Cao Bằng. The film’s commercial performance was major: Box Office Mojo records roughly US$9.54 million in Vietnam and US$9.77 million worldwide from reported territories. Following its domestic success, 3388 Films announced a broad international theatrical rollout beginning in late May 2025 across North America and several European markets. The film therefore combines craft ambition, franchise-building, and unusually strong commercial reach for a Vietnamese period horror mystery.

Legacy

Thám tử Kiên: Kỳ án không đầu quickly became important for two reasons. First, its domestic performance showed that a Vietnamese period mystery with horror elements could play as a large commercial event rather than a niche prestige production. Reported Vietnam grosses above US$9.5 million place it among the significant local successes of 2025. Second, the film traveled. International sales and a multi-territory theatrical rollout gave the movie a life beyond the domestic holiday frame and presented a specifically Vietnamese combination of Nguyễn-dynasty setting, detective fiction, and folk horror to overseas audiences. The film also strengthens an emerging mode of franchise-building in Vietnamese cinema. Instead of producing a conventional sequel to Người vợ cuối cùng, Victor Vũ extracted a supporting character and changed genres around him. That makes the relationship between the two movies more interesting than simple repetition: a period romance/melodrama becomes the launch point for a detective-horror branch. Its historical setting is not treated as museum material; it becomes the engine for suspense, design, folklore, and spectacle, which is exactly why it works so well in a Movie Night context.
